Geography in Transition: Navigating a New Era of AI, Sustainability, and Education

The 2026 30th International Geographical Conference of Taiwan (IGCT 2026) will be hosted by the Department of Geography at National Taiwan Normal University. This gathering offers a rich intellectual platform for geographers, researchers, students, government agencies, civil society organizations, and practitioners to explore contemporary geographic issues and showcase recent advances in geographic research in Taiwan.
This year’s conference theme centers on the transformation of geography research and education amid a rapidly evolving world. The expanding role of artificial intelligence is reshaping our profession in complex and profound ways, presenting both promising opportunities and significant risks. At the same time, we face a period marked by multiple overlapping crises including the climate crisis, armed conflicts, famines, and global economic instability that demand urgent and thoughtful responses. These challenges compel us to fundamentally rethink geographic research, education, and pedagogy. We must critically re-examine our approaches by adopting critical pedagogies and research methods that challenge and transform the normative, analytical, and ethical frameworks underpinning geographic knowledge production. At the same time, it is essential to responsibly integrate new technologies such as AI and advanced data sciences while maintaining a reflective and critical stance toward their implications and limitations.
The conference raises important questions: How can our scientific discipline—both in research and education—remain relevant and impactful amid today’s global challenges? How should we transform geographic research methods and pedagogies to meet the needs of this new era? How can we integrate emerging technologies while also preparing students to become responsible, critical, and engaged global citizens?
This year’s theme highlights geography as a discipline and field of knowledge in transition. We welcome contributions from all subfields of geography to join this important and timely dialogue. The conference sub-themes are broad and diverse, reflecting the richness and complexity of contemporary geography in Taiwan and beyond. We encourage the submission of research papers, case studies, and empirical findings to be part of this exciting and engaging event.

Call for Papers
We are now accepting paper submissions for the 2026 Geography Conference, to be held at National Taiwan Normal University on April 18–19, 2026. We warmly invite researchers, scholars, and practitioners to submit their work and join in meaningful exchange on advancing geographic and environmental knowledge, while opening up new directions in cutting-edge research. The conference program includes paper presentations, workshops, panel discussions, and a student competition. Scholars, policymakers, educators, and students are warmly invited to participate.
This conference welcomes contributions from all subfields of geography, as well as related disciplines in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and technology. The organizing committee especially encourages submissions that foster transdisciplinary dialogue and collaboration, with a focus on the transitions shaping geography in this new era. We therefore encourage participants to look forward explicitly and explore innovative perspectives and approaches. Put differently, as we lead efforts to redefine, rethink, and transform geography both in Taiwan and globally, we must ask: where do we go from here?
In addition to paper presentations, scholars and experts are invited to propose self-organized panels, workshops and forums to enrich the conference program. Please submit your panel proposal before the deadline.
